Unprecedented Tragedy

WIRES has been rescuing and caring for wildlife for over 30 years and recent weeks have been some of the worst in our history. On top of the worst drought on record in NSW, catastrophic bushfires have taken lives, hundreds of homes and destroyed over 4.9 million hectares of land.

There are still over one hundred fires burning and little relief in sight with summer forecasts indicating drier than average conditions, below average rainfall and extreme heat. Even without emergency events summer is always frantically busy for wildlife rescue and in December 2019 WIRES received over 20,000 calls to our 1300 line and volunteers attended over 3,300 rescues.

We deeply thank everyone that has donated or offered help at this tragic time. We are inspired daily by the support of the community and the outstanding rescue and care work provided by our rescue team and volunteers, to daily help hundreds of sick, injured and orphaned native animals. With your ongoing support we will continue to work hard to help higher numbers of animals and to do all we can to help protect wildlife and preserve their future in the wild.
